PAS assemblymen failed to show up at the Perak palace as summoned by Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah because the party did not want to make wrong decision on  who would be the next menteri besar.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said this today while emphasising that the party had the utmost respect for the Malay rulers.

“With regard to our non-attendance at the Perak palace, that was because PAS did not want to make a wrong decision, especially when it concerns a decree from the sultan.

“PAS has ordered all its assemblymen to go to the palace when the sultan next summons them,” he said in a statement today.

The law minister reiterated that PAS would work with Perikatan Nasional allies – Bersatu and Umno – to resolve the crisis in Perak.

“PAS will cooperate with its PN partners to prudently resolve the Perak political crisis in a way that is best for the future of our religion and country,” Takiyuddin said.

The Perak sultan summoned Bersatu and PAS assemblymen to Istana Kinta yesterday but PAS lawmakers failed to show up.

Perak PAS chief Razman Zakaria was reported as saying the party leadership had called off the meeting as the party did not have an answer for the sultan on where it stood on the question of who should be MB.

Sultan Nazrin has since met with Umno and Pakatan Harapan leaders over the matter of filling the position vacated by Ahmad Faizal Azumu who lost a motion of confidence in the state assembly on Friday.

Faizal, who is Bersatu deputy president, said his party had yet to receive an invitation to meet with the state ruler.

Perak Umno chief Saarani Mohamad has emerged as the top choice for the role of MB and has the support of most of the Umno reps.

Umno, despite its avowed loyalty to the PN pact in Perak, has been flirting with the idea of allying with DAP in the state, where the latter holds 16 seats.

The two independent assemblymen are reported to be behind Saarani. – December 9, 2020.
