PUTRAJAYA is leaving it to the authorities to investigate Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali for violating quarantine rules, said Muhyiddin Yassin.

The prime minister, in a statement today, said the government views seriously the PAS leader’s breach of measures against Covid-19.

“The Perikatan Nasional administration’s stance is that all Malaysians are governed by the law, with no exceptions.

“On that note, I leave it to the relevant authorities to conduct a full investigation and take action according to the law.”

Khairuddin violated quarantine rules after returning from Turkey on July 7 by attending Parliament and events in his constituency, Kuala Nerus.

The issue was brought to light by his predecessor and DAP lawmaker Teresa Kok.

Khairuddin was fined RM1,000 on August 7, and has said he will donate four months’ salary to the government’s Covid-19 fund.

Opposition MPs and the public have criticised the punishment as “double standards”.

Pokok Sena’s Mahfuz Omar today likened the difference in the degree of punishment meted out to civilians and the minister for flouting coronavirus rules to the 1960 P. Ramlee film Antara Dua Darjat (Between Two Classes).

Khairuddin has caught flak from social media users, with a petition calling for his resignation started.

Recently, a nasi kandar restaurant owner in the Sivagangga cluster was sentenced to five months’ jail and fined RM12,000, while a woman photographed wearing the pink quarantine wristband at a Perak eatery got a day’s jail and an RM8,000 fine. – August 24, 2020.
