THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has opened an investigation into the source of Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s assets, revealed in court yesterday to be in excess of RM800 million.

“MACC finds the matter to be serious and I have given instructions for investigations to begin,” MACC chief commissioner Latheefa Koya told reporters in Kuala Lumpur Court Complex today.

To Tengku Adnan’s testimony that his net worth was already disclosed when he declared his assets to then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 2001, Latheefa’s response was: “So he claims.”

“Our issue is not about the revelation of the assets but how he got that assets. I have given instructions to start the investigations,” she told reporters outside the courtroom where she testified at Najib Razak’s SRC International trial this afternoon.

Tengku Adnan,, testifying yesterday in his own defence in his bribery trial, was compelled to reveal to the court that he had declared to the prime minister in 2001 that he had assets worth over RM938 million.

He testified that he had made similar declarations of assets totalling RM711 million in 2006; RM691 million in 2013; and RM782 million in 2016.

In a video posted on Facebook today, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim expressed amazement at Tengku Adnan’s net worth, adding that an investigation must be carried out into how Tengku Adnan has amassed such wealth.

“I urge the rakyat to open their eyes and mind and to demand the new prime minister to explain the matter and not just to be concerned about grabbing power in an unethical way,” Anwar said.

Bersatu youth chief Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman said the revelations of Tengku Adnan’s wealth raise questions over the net worth of the man’s Barisan Nasional colleagues.

“If Ku Nan (Tengku Adnan), a BN secretary-general, could accumulate assets to around RM1 billion, imagine the other BN leaders,” said Syed Saddiq in a tweet today. – March 5, 2020.
