THE outcome of the Tanjung Piai by-election is down to the 15% of voters who are undecided, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said.
With just three days of campaigning left before polling on Saturday, he said the signs were “encouraging”.
“The response from Malay and Chinese voters has been very good so far and the race has now reached a critical stage,” said Muhyiddin at the Pakatan Harapan election centre in Pontian today.
“But a lot will depend on the 15%, or around 8,000 voters, who are fence-sitters,” said the Pagoh MP.
He said PH has identified these undecided voters and will use the remaining days to convince them.
There are 52,986 voters in Tanjung Piai – 57.6% of them are Malay, 41.4% Chinese and 1% Indian.
Muhyiddin said about 7,000 to 8,000 constituents are outstation voters in the 25-45 age group.
Muhyiddin said PH was also contacting these voters to come back and vote.
“We have sent them letters and have tried calling them. We hope they will return to vote.
“On the positive side, almost all the Tanjung Piai voters who are residing here say they want to vote. It’s very unusual but encouraging.”
As the Tanjung Piai race nears the end, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad will speak at a ceramah tonight in the Barisan Nasional territory of Kukup.
The 94-year-old will meet voters in Pekan Nanas tomorrow morning. – November 13, 2019.
