ANWAR Ibrahim yesterday offered “proof” that PAS paid RM1.42 million to Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown as a settlement in a defamation suit against the whistle-blower site.
Speaking to a crowd of around 250 people last night at Semenyih, Anwar said the statements proved that PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang paid a total of RM1.42 million to Rewcastle-Brown last month.
“I have the bank statements. I have blanked it out because I don’t want reporters to take any pictures yet. I want to wait for PAS to deny it,” said Anwar who is on a campaign trail for the coming Semenyih by-election.
“The date February 19, 2019, from PAS to Claire Rewcastle, RM1.422 million paid. Paying to someone who slanders us? No.
“If I am wrong, sue me. I am Anwar Ibrahim, I will not say it if I don’t have the facts,” he said.
PAS denied it made any out-of-court settlement over a defamation suit lodged by the Islamist party against Rewcastle-Brown over an article on her news site which claimed that PAS had received RM90 million from Umno before the 14th general election in May last year.
On February 13, Abdul Hadi said both sides agreed to settle the suit on confidential conditions.
Anwar told the crowd at last night’s ceramah that he had decided to expose PAS’ lies after the party claimed there were efforts within Pakatan Harapan to overthrow Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“This is all the work of PAS, which is why I have started to call them out,” he said, adding that he would not tolerate lies and slander. – February 28, 2019.
