Winning pastries, croissant and cake at a bakery cafe

WE ordered a truffle mushroom quiche and a focaccia pesto with cherry tomatoes and Parmigiano Reggiano.

Then I couldn’t resist the almond croissant that looked like a hedgehog with toasted slivers of almonds sticking out of it

“What’s good here?” I asked the friend who had brought me to YE Boulangerie & Patisserie in Shah Alam.

“Everything,” she said.

Indeed, your eyes captured the wide array of pastries, croissants, quiches, sourdough breads, and galettes on the counter as you entered.

I’ve always had reservations about quiches and how ordinary they tasted. But this truffle mushroom quiche was amazing. I cut into the lightest buttery pastry, spilling out the mushrooms in an utterly delicious, creamy sauce with hints of truffle. I wished I didn’t have to share it.

I liked the sourdough focaccia “tart”, baked with pesto round its broad rim. Its moist, cheesy centre was filled with juicy cherry tomatoes. It was certainly a lovely, flavourful bready tart with all-round crispy pesto edges for breakfast.

I made a happy mess taking bites of the multi-layered, flaky, and buttery almond croissant. The thing with almond croissants is that they’re always covered with icing sugar, which I dislike. This one was studded with a line of almond slivers that made it resemble a plump hedgehog. Within the croissant was a thin layer of almond marzipan that made it lightly sweet, balanced with a sprinkling of sea salt on top.

A good scone tells a lot about a patisserie and that square, plain scone at YE Boulangerie did not disappoint. It was served with butter and strawberry conserve. It was slightly crumbly with a buttery and not-too-dry texture.

I saw someone ordering shokupan, or Japanese milk bread, with kaya and butter, which is a popular item here.

I would have loved that but was persuaded against it as our final sweet flourish would be the roll cake with taro. The mention of taro always gets me, whether in a dessert or savoury dish. This Swiss roll cake was eggy and super light, rolled up with a generous swathe of whipped cream, with taro paste in the centre. The taro had a rich, lovely aroma and was an excellent pairing with the cream in the roll cake.

We ordered a pot of Dong Ding oolong tea to go with it. This fragrant green tea was a perfect match with the cake.

The cafe serves a breakfast platter of three or five dishes of your choice. These include scrambled egg with chives, pork sausages, truffle potato salad, cauliflower salad with tempeh, sauteed mushrooms, hummus and sourdough Shokupan toast.

Open at 8am to 6.30pm, this cosy, homely bakery cafe is a quiet, lovely place to chill out. And the coffee is so good.
