RED Granite Pictures has paid off the balance of a US$60 million (RM240 million) settlement with the US government, bringing an end to charges the production company profited from money embezzled from 1Malaysia Development Bhd, Variety reports

The report, quoting a source, said the funds would ultimately be returned to the Malaysian government, once certain processing fees were paid.

“This case was resolved to the satisfaction of both sides with the payment of $60 million, which fell squarely in the estimated valuation of Red Granite Pictures, as determined by an outside expert,” said Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the US Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles.

The company that produced The Wolf of Wall Street is owned by Riza Aziz, stepson of former prime minister Najib Razak. It was accused of receiving more than US$100 million of funds stolen from 1MDB, charges that are part of efforts across the globe to recover billions of dollars stolen from the Malaysian state fund. –  September 25, 2018
