THE Transport Ministry has deferred enforcing the vehicle entry permit (VEP) requirement for foreign motor vehicles due to become effective next month.

In a press statement, it said it was working to address problems with the registration system.

“Registration for VEP opened in April. Numerous announcements were made to the effect prior to and during this period of time. This means a period of six months is given to owners of foreign vehicles to complete the process,” it said.

“In light of several issues made known to the ministry, including difficulties in getting an appointment for RFID tag installation, the ministry will defer enforcement of VEP on all outbound traffic at both the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex and Sultan Iskandar building during peak hours until further notice.

“The ministry has also undertaken measures to update the systems and the process to ensure smooth registration for all owners of foreign vehicles.

Singapore media have reported the frustration of the republic’s motorists attempting to register for the VEP and its RFID (radio frequency identification) tag.

The ministry today said owners of foreign vehicles can still register for VEP on the web portal managed by the Road Transport Department at https://vep.jpj.gov.my

They can also get the VEP-RFID tag installed or collected at four designated fitment centres in Johor Baru – the Gelang Patah Southbound R&R stop, Plaza Angsana open carpark, Pandan R&R stop, and the Lima Kedai Toll Plaza.

A fifth fitment centre will soon open at the RTD office in the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex. Details of operations will be announced in due time, the ministry said.

The VEP-RFID system is to enable foreign vehicle owners to pay for entry into Malaysia and to prevent vehicles with outstanding fines from leaving. – September 23, 2019.
