ABDUL Hamid Bador will take over as Malaysia’s 12th Inspector-General of Police on May 4, the home minister announced today.
Muhyiddin Yassin said the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong has consented to the appointment of Hamid as the new IGP, replacing Mohamad Fuzi Harun, who retires on Saturday.
Hamid will assume his new role that day for two years, until May 3, 2021.
Speaking to reporters in Putrajaya today, Muhyiddin also thanked Fuzi for his service.
“On behalf of the government, I would like to express my utmost appreciation to Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun, for his contribution and service since his appointment as the IGP in 2017.
Hamid, who turns 61 on August 7, has served in various capacities in the police force.
Muhyiddin said he is confident that Hamid’s vast experience would make him competent to head the police.
Hamid has served as the Gombak district police deputy chief, state Special Branch chief, deputy director of the Foreign Intelligence Unit (E3), deputy chief of Special Branch and Special Branch head.
Hamid was transferred to the Prime Minister’s department in 2015 when he was the deputy director of Special Branch following his advice to former prime minister Najib Razak on the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) business deals.
Hamid refused to take up the posting as a sign of protest, but was reinstalled and promoted as Special Branch chief soon after Pakatan Harapan took over the federal government from Barisan Nasional. – May 2, 2019.
